Module 1 Discussion
What
are considered to be the functions of the manager from an HR perspective and
how good do you think you are at performing these functions? Be sure to cite
(APA) where appropriate.
Module 2 Discussion
Discuss
what the major Forecasting Demand and Employee Supply approaches (p. 127-133)
are about. Then, address what types of Forecasting Demand and Employee Supply
approaches are used in an organization you are familiar with (it could be your
work setting or not—no need to mention the organizationâs name if you prefer
not to) and if are there any HR Information Systems discussed in your text that
might help this organization plan better. Donât forget to cite your sources
used.
Module 3 Discussion
Discuss
the major tenets of Title VII of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and the Civil
Rights Act of 1991. Then, take on the role of supervisor of a unit in a
computer software company which has approximately 200 employees. You have been
told by your boss that you must downsize your unit, in order to help the
company save money in these âtough economic times.â After reviewing the matter
with the other managers in your organization, you decide that you will have to
terminate 4 employees. These employees just happen to be of African-American
descent and they are all over 40 years of age. After notifying the employees,
they object to being terminated. You claim that you are entitled to let them
go. What parts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1991 apply and what parts of
the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967 may apply? What issues
do you believe the EEOC will use to decide whether to pursue the case? Do you
think that your decision will prevail, and why or why not, based on these Acts
and how the courts have typically decided these types of cases? Do you think
that the ultimate decision will be âjustâ for the parties involved? Use
citations where appropriate (APA).

Module 4 Discussion
Discuss the costs and
benefits (meeting or exceeding quotas, turnover rates of recruits, success of
the recruits on the job, job acceptances via different sources, and estimates
of quality of hires) of a recruitment strategy used by a particular organization
that you are familiar with (either your own or some other setting). You may
need to estimate, gather from experts and/or guess at some of these figures. Be
sure to cite (APA) where appropriate.
Module 5 Discussion
Discuss why managers
need to know about the benefits and services offered in their organizations and
discuss what are considered to be some of the more common ones. Be sure to
discuss the basics of each mandated and/or voluntary option. Remember to cite appropriately
(APA).
Module 6 Discussion
What
career development stage (early, midcareer, and/or preretirement for instance)
would you say you are in at present and what concerns are associated with this
stage? Finally, discuss how your boss might better meet your needs and the
organizationâs needs in light of this information. Cite where appropriate
(APA).
Module 7 Discussion
Discuss what the
Progressive Approach to discipline, the Positive Approach to discipline, and
the GAP approach (listen to AVP to get more information) are all about. What do
you see as the essential elements (commonalities) of these approaches? Do any
of these approaches give you concerns as a manager? Which approach do you think
you would prefer to use if you were working with a difficult employee and why?
Cite where appropriate (APA).
Module 8 Discussion
Discuss
how the elements of a good Health, Safety, and Wellness Program might relate to
workforce productivity. Are there any studies relating to this topic, and
what do they show? Be sure to cite where appropriate (APA).
