Required text:
Joseph Epstein “The Culture of Celebrity”
And at least two outside sources
Here is the question that needs to be answered:
In Joseph Epstein’s article, “The Culture of Celebrity,” he quotes Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, stating “So long as man remains free, he strives for nothing so incessantly and painfully as to find someone to worship” and goes on to say, “If contemporary celebrities are the best thing society has on offer as living gods for us to worship, this is not good news.” Epstein clearly asserts that our current fascination and cultivation of celebrity culture has a detrimental effect on our society. Do you agree or disagree with this assessment? Take a stand on this issue, using examples from Epstein as well as outside examples present in our culture today.
