Theatre Review Assignment and Rubric
You will write a review of between 500 and 700 words, due via Canvas on 4/11 at 11:59PM.
Please be advised: late submissions will be reduced a full letter grade per day late, and that this
project is 15% of your total semester grade.
You may review any play you have watched as part of your coursework in this class thus far.
Before writing your review, I would advise reading or re-reading the following:
Chapter 5 of Experiencing Theatre.
A handful of New York Times theatre reviews: https://www.nytimes.com/reviews/theater.
Curtain Up’s review submission guidelines:
http://www.curtainup.com/curtainupguidelines.html.
(It is likely a good idea to glance at Chapter 3 of Experiencing Theatre again, too.)
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Pay close, close attention to Curtain Up’s 5 C’s of Critical Writing. Be sure to follow to the best
of your ability their tips for writing style and focus.
Take a look at their review of 1984 to get a sense of their style and methods in practice:

GRADING:
50% of your grade will be based on the quality of your analysis. Is your opinion well-formed, well
thought out, and well stated? Have you given the show proper and deep consideration?
50% of your grade will be based on writing mechanics. Proper spelling, grammar, punctuation,
and style all fall under this category.
